Paraglide in Chamonix

  • Summary

Chamonix region offers ideal mountain flying conditions with big thermals and high take off peaks, making it one of the hot spots for paragliding in the world. Add eagles, glaciers, villages nestled in the valleys to the mix and you cannot beat the experience of flying here. We are offering you the chance to learn how to fly on your own - yes, we are talking lessons! Guided by professional instructors with an experience of more than thousand flights, you will learn both practical and theoritical aspects of this sport in a safe manner. The practice sessions will be conducted during the mornings due to calmer aerological conditions followed by theory lessons in the afternoons. Depending on your progress, you should be able to do your first solo flight in radio contact with the instructor. This beginner's course is the first of two courses to earn the certificate to fly solo. Happy gliding!

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, more commonly called Chamonix, lays claim as the birth place of paragliding, as the climbers here were one of the first to use canopies to make their decent after reaching the summit. These days the skies are almost always specked with the colourful parachutes of people flying overhead.

    Day - I

You will learn how to how to control the kite on the ground on lesser slopes. This is called ground handling or kiting. It will introduce you to control your kite (or glider). As the wind changes, the kite will move and you too will have to move with it to stay underneath it's centre. As you will notice, not keeping to the middle will collapse the kite to the ground. Practicing the movements repeatedly will help you move instinctively with your glider and feel whether it is overhead or not without having to look at it. These basics will help you not just to take off and land, but also how to handle the kite during wind and pressure changes up in the air. Theory class will follow each practical lesson to reinforce your practical learning

    Day - II & III

Revise lessons learnt on day 1, followed by more practice and theory. You will also experience your first take off from the school slope where you will apply your kite control skills. As preparation for the solo flight, the concept of the flight plan will be introduced.

    Day - IV & V

If your progress is good so far, you will be allowed your first solo flight under the radio guidance of two instructors. The flight will be made according to the guidelines set in the flight plan, which will help you manage risks and optimize flights for safety reasons from launch to landing. An analysis of the flight will be done afterwards to help you understand your actions and point out improvements. Depending on the weather conditions, you can conduct one or two sorties each day.
